On November 21, 2011, the President signed into law the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. This new law provides an expanded work opportunity tax credit to businesses that hire eligible unemployed veterans and for the first time also makes part of the credit available to tax-exempt organizations. Businesses claim the credit as part of the general business credit, and tax-exempt organizations claim it against their payroll tax liability. The credit is available for eligible unemployed veterans who begin work on or after November 22, 2011, and before March 2014.
On the Job Training
When an employer has intent to hire a particular program participant, Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries is able to facilitate a trial period where an employer can be reimbursed for some of the costs of the new hire through an on-the-job training scenario. During this period, an employer hires the individual as a standard employee and is reimbursed for the wages of that individual for up to ninety days.
Upon the hiring of a program participant, staff from Ohio Valley Goodwill continue to support both the employer and the employee. During retention, staff are able to assist with disability related – job performance, and various other issues to ensure the new employee is an asset to the employer.
The focus of this service is to overcome any non-professional hardships our program participants are dealing with, whether it is access to professional attire or lack of knowledge of the contemporary job seeking environment. This service helps to ensure that our participants are ready to enter the workforce and maintain employment without outside distractions. Job Coaching Services
Once an employer has hired a new employee, an onsite job coach can provide support for both the employee and the employer. A job coach will assist with training, worksite modifications and disability related issues as they arise to ensure the new employee is meeting the performance and quality criteria of the business. The job coach will also assist with transportation and at-home needs to prevent problems that could cause attendance or other issues at work.
